a virtual warehouse

a virtual warehouse (ISLAND magazine 01) ABSTRACT [...]Language was born in its visual format, from reading the appearance of elements in the wild to representing these elements through marks on the earth and on the walls of caves. Visual literacy implies the ability to simultaneously understand an image or environment as a sum of its parts - as well as its individual components. Today, the majority of our species is more visually literate than ever before. Conditioned by our hyperactive visual culture, we have developed a heightened ability to grasp the virtual space of an image, trained by the frequency in which we share and process information in our day to day.

The accompanying images are computer generated, but because they present themselves in the language of interior photography, they trigger our background processes of spatial perception. In the first instance of noticing the image, the appearance of depth and light might delay the question of the existence of the space itself. The way our comprehension of space is hardwired means that our initial attention to these images prioritizes a ‘sum of parts’ reading of its content in search of a narrative to the scene that’s being interpolated.

Like signs and symbols in nature – the objects in the renders are read as a part of the overall depiction of the environment. They provide a way into the virtual warehouse, as the viewer finds every day or familiar items that help gauge the scale of their own bodies in the non-existent space. The absence of (realistic) figures, much like the interior renders of real estate media, may invite the viewer in further, placing them within the scene as though they are represented by the cameras capturing the images themselves. The combined affect could be described as a momentary suspension of disbelief in the authenticity of the space in the renders - despite being generated decidedly short of hyper realistic.[...]

A rough scribble with intention is NOT a doodle according to Oxford English!
